Hatching Problems

For some reason, it seems as if there is a glut of used or brand-new-but-discounted hatches on the market. This is wonderful. Just make sure to mount them on a completely flat surface when you install them, as the slightest racking is too much.

I prefer aluminum, as many of the plastic hatches are just too flimsy for live-aboard use.

Of course, if you require an exact replacement, that’s pricey. But you can often buy a just slightly bigger hatch that is cheaper, and then widen the opening slightly. (Yes, you can use a smaller hatch but that’s often more work.)
